Quieting the collective lizard brain

Seths Blog: Quieting the lizard brain

It is interesting to be in the midst of reading Seth Godin’s “Linchpin”, his “Seven Ways To Reinvent Yourself” manifesto and my own past blog posts. It is interesting to have someone explain what you have been going through in simple terms — over these past two years, I have been training myself in effective ways to quiet my lizard brain.

However, this post is not about the individual — rather it is about the collective…the collective lizard brain. How do we get people to collectively quiet the lizard brain? Is it feasible or is it darn near impossible? I ask these questions because even an individual has found a way to effectively quiet her lizard brain on a regular basis, she is constantly under siege from the lizard brains of family, friends, strangers, co-workers, etc. who have not yet learned how to quiet the lizard. Is there any way to counteract this ‘siege’? Or is the quieting of the lizard brain a solitary journey for each one of us, until we encounter others who are on the same path?

I don’t know if there is an answer to this…but I do know what it looks like when the collective lizard brain is in charge. It results in mediocre products, less-than-compelling stories being told, non-inspiring human interactions and the acceptance of “things as they are”. It results in a limited view of the possibilities for an individual, group, company and even brand. It results in the collective looking to someone else for their next thoughts, steps & actions. It results in the society that we have had for a very long time, that is coming apart at the hinges.

And reflecting on society as it is now…I know that we can do better than this. I know that we can — we have to encourage and demand of each other more than just the bare minimum…to be more than just mediocre. Maybe a collective ‘calling-out’ of our thoughts, words & actions might just lead us to a collective quieting of the lizard brain. Just maybe…hmmm…I cannot wait for that day to come.   😉
